A Greek energy company is investigating the production of hydrogen bunker fuel aboard a ship that burns liquefied natural gas.
To develop a system for an LNG and hydrogen-powered ship, Maran Dry Management (a division of the Angelicoussis Group) will collaborate with class society Rina and ship design firm SDARI.
According to maritime news service Tradewinds, when the ship’s machinery is operating at a lower pace at sea, the main gas fuel will combine with steam to make hydrogen and carbon dioxide on demand.
The partners were quoted as noting that the solution “addresses existing LNG bunkering facilities and requires no onshore hydrogen infrastructure and no need for delivery and storage of hydrogen on board.”
According to the report, the ship can be constructed as a typical dual-fuel ship with additional equipment incorporated as needed and per regulatory requirements.
