South Africa’s government is in talks with investors for green hydrogen projects, with Germany identifying the country as a vital source of the fuel, trade, industry, and competition minister Ebrahim Patel said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that the government is developing a pipeline of green-hydrogen projects worth approximately R270 billion over the next decade. Renewable energy is used to produce the fuel.

“The president has recognized green hydrogen as a significant win for South Africa,” Patel said in a phone interview. “We are already in conversations with a number of private enterprises about this, and what is very encouraging is that Germany has recognized South Africa as a main source of green hydrogen.”

According to the minister, the government intends to build a domestic market for hydrogen, with any excess being exported. “We’re hoping that the hydrogen market expands outside Germany,” he stated.
