Statkraft, a Norwegian state-owned power company, has proposed a hybrid approach to reduce carbon emissions by combining green hydrogen, natural gas, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). This method aims to address the environmental concerns associated with natural gas while leveraging the advantages of green hydrogen.

Challenges with Natural Gas

Natural gas is widely used due to its efficiency and lower carbon emissions compared to other fossil fuels. Nevertheless, it still generates significant CO2 emissions, which contribute to climate change.

Integrating CCS with Natural Gas

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology can capture up to 90% of the CO2 emissions produced from the use of fossil fuels in electricity generation and industrial processes, preventing CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

Statkraft’s Hybrid Approach

By combining green hydrogen with natural gas and deploying CCS technology, Statkraft aims to create a more sustainable energy solution. This approach could help to bridge the gap between current natural gas infrastructure and future green hydrogen adoption, providing a transitional pathway towards a lower-carbon energy system. If successful, Statkraft’s hybrid approach could significantly reduce final emissions and contribute to global carbon reduction efforts.
