Stellantis, the European-American car company, has announced plans to significantly increase its production of hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles. This comes straight from the head of the company’s hydrogen program, Jean-Michel Billig.

Stellantis aims at manufacturing a staggering number of 100,000 fuel cell vehicles annually by 2030. Billig has ambitious expectations for hydrogen’s role in future mobility, speculating that nearly 40 percent of all commercial vehicles could utilize this technology in the coming decade. “Hydrogen will be an essential part of CO2-free mobility in the future,” says Billig, emphasizing the company’s goal of offering a completely decarbonized product range in Europe from 2030.

The production of larger vehicles is starting this year in Poland, while the development in North America should follow soon. Notably, the company plans to produce the RAM 5500 pick-up truck, a fuel cell variant, in Mexico.

The car manufacturer has been selling medium-sized commercial vehicles with fuel cells since the end of 2022. Although the sales figures are relatively low with just 350 units sold, Stellantis is starting series production.

According to Stellantis, battery and fuel cell technologies are complementary. The company sees potential in both, owing to their respective use cases. This broad spectrum approach to green technology is a step in the right direction for sustainable mobility.
