The Port of Suape, Companhia de Gás de Pernambuco (Copergás) and Qair Brasil are studying a partnership between the companies in a pilot project for the production of green hydrogen in Pernambuco.
The product would be destined, through Copergás’ distribution network, to the company’s industrial clients in the region of Ipojuca, one of the eight municipalities located around the port complex.
The companies intend to draw up a tripartite memorandum of understanding, with the intention of analyzing the feasibility of the initiative, using the gas company’s distribution network
In a meeting between the Director of Environment and Sustainability of the Port of Suape, Carlos André Cavalcanti, the Technical and Commercial Director of the Gas Company of Pernambuco (Copergás), Fabrício Bomtempo, and the Director of Operations of Qair Brazil, Gustavo Silva, the preparation of a memorandum of understanding between the three companies was defined in order to analyze the feasibility of the project.
“We understand that green hydrogen is an energy alternative that will become viable in the coming years and we, within the commitment to the environment and sustainability, have every interest in promoting the production of gas from renewable sources and demonstrate the potential of Pernambuco, aiming to attract new investments,” said Fabrício Bomtempo.
“The construction and formalization of this tripartite partnership is fundamental for the development of the green hydrogen production chain in the Suape Industrial Port Complex,” said Carlos Cavalcanti. “With this, we intend to deepen the economic feasibility studies of the future market, aiming to structure the scale of production, storage, and progressive distribution through Copergás’ pipeline network in the complex, and having as a starting point a small-scale production unit,” he added.
Qair Brasil is a subsidiary of the French multinational group Qair International, which operates in 17 countries with projects in the area of sustainable development and energy transition.
In Pernambuco, Qair already has a large project under development in the Port of Suape, where the group’s investment may reach R$ 20 billion. The planned capacity is 2,240 MW, with production of 488,000 tons/year. The project will be installed in two areas, with approximately 110 hectares.
“The final configuration of each project will be defined from the results and conclusions of the feasibility studies underway,” says information material from Qair Brasil, which sees the country with potential to become in the future “one of the main world players” in the production of green hydrogen.
