Subsea7, a prominent player in the offshore energy sector, has joined forces with EnBW in a Memorandum of Understanding to undertake a comprehensive study on offshore wind-powered hydrogen production.

This groundbreaking partnership aims to explore various concepts, spanning pilot to commercial scale facilities, and evaluate the technical and commercial aspects of green offshore hydrogen production.

Within the study, EnBW will focus on wind farm design, optimization, and provide invaluable operational and maintenance expertise to ensure a holistic evaluation of the project’s technical and economic feasibility.

Subsea7, on the other hand, will spearhead research into critical areas such as subsea electrical and flowline infrastructure, flow assurance, and integration of the hydrogen production system on wind turbine generator (WTG) foundations or separate platforms.

The collaboration between these two industry leaders will also encompass conducting economic analyses to establish a viable commercial model. By determining the development and operational costs, they aim to ascertain the levelized cost of hydrogen and explore the technical and economic potential of various offshore hydrogen production solutions.

Stian Sande, Strategy Director Energy Transition at Subsea7, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with EnBW and the collective effort to advance offshore hydrogen production. Recognizing the importance of collaboration among developers, operators, contractors, and technology providers, Subsea7’s expertise in delivering complex energy projects positions them as a global leader in driving innovative energy solutions for the present and future.

The goals of this collaboration extend far beyond theoretical exploration. By harnessing the power of offshore wind and utilizing electrolysis to produce hydrogen, the project holds tremendous potential for the energy transition. Offshore wind-powered hydrogen production offers a sustainable pathway to decarbonization, as it leverages renewable energy sources to generate hydrogen without carbon emissions. The development of viable solutions will contribute to achieving climate targets and fostering a green economy.

The impact of successful offshore wind-powered hydrogen production could be transformative. It would not only drive the growth of the hydrogen industry but also strengthen the offshore wind sector, enabling the coupling of these two promising technologies. The synergy between offshore wind farms and hydrogen production presents an opportunity to create a renewable energy ecosystem that supports the global energy transition.

While the collaboration between Subsea7 and EnBW holds immense promise, several challenges lie ahead. The development of offshore hydrogen production systems necessitates technological innovation, efficient infrastructure, and cost optimization to ensure competitive pricing. Overcoming these hurdles will require robust research and development, as well as the integration of expertise from multiple disciplines.

As Subsea7 and EnBW embark on this joint endeavor, the outcome of their study will shape the future of offshore wind-powered hydrogen production. With their combined knowledge and dedication, the potential to unlock a sustainable, low-carbon energy solution is within reach.
