The development of an innovative hydrogen refueling station for vehicles has progressed closer to actuality with the submission of planning permission this week.

Four publicly accessible hydrogen refueling stations are in the works for the Tees Valley region as a part of the hydrogen transport hub initiative. These stations are funded by the UK Government and will provide hydrogen fuel to airport vehicles, delivery trucks, vans, and other diverse vehicle types.

Plans for one of these stations, specifically located at Teesside Airport, have been submitted to the Darlington Borough Council. Element 2, a hydrogen refueling company, spearheads this project. The Government’s funding will help supply the necessary infrastructure to meet the rising demand from heavy goods vehicle operators and commercial distribution fleets.

Teesside was previously home to a temporary refueling station and had trialed the use of low-emission hydrogen-fueled vehicles in 2021. The airport’s other initiatives include promoting the development and adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The broader project receives funding from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency.
