The Dutch government, through its Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, has issued a tender titled “Emergency Electricity Equipment—Uninterruptible Power Supplies” to enhance the reliability of power systems within the hydrogen industry. The tender was published on June 11, 2024, and the submission deadline is July 17, 2024. This initiative is crucial for ensuring the steady development and sustainability of the hydrogen sector in the Netherlands, an industry identified as key to national and global clean energy transitions.

Main Objectives and Requirements

The primary goal of the tender is to procure uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to support hydrogen production facilities, ensuring continuous and stable operations even during power outages. Hydrogen production is pivotal in reducing carbon emissions by offering a clean alternative to fossil fuels. The Dutch government aims to mitigate operational risks that could disrupt hydrogen production and the supply chain by securing reliable power backup systems.

The tender specifically calls for suppliers who can provide advanced UPS systems that are robust, reliable, and compatible with existing hydrogen production infrastructure.

These backup systems are expected to have the following key features:

High Efficiency: The UPS systems must operate at a high efficiency to minimize energy waste, thereby aligning with the hydrogen sector’s sustainability goals.
– Scalability: The equipment should be scalable to adapt to varying sizes of hydrogen production facilities.
– Remote Monitoring: Advanced monitoring capabilities allow remote supervision and control to address any issues promptly.
– Quick Switchover: The UPS should enable an instantaneous switch to backup power without disrupting the ongoing hydrogen production processes.

Technical Requirements

– Power Capacity: The UPS units should accommodate different ranges of power capacities, accommodating small—to large-scale production facilities.
– Battery Technology: Preference is given to systems utilizing state-of-the-art battery technology, such as lithium-ion, which offers longer life cycles and improved efficiency over traditional lead-acid batteries.
– Regulatory Compliance: All UPS units must comply with national and EU safety and environmental standards regulations.

The technical requirements ensure that the selected UPS systems will enhance operational security within the hydrogen production facilities and contribute to broader sustainability goals by utilizing energy-efficient and long-lasting technologies.
