Afsia highlights green hydrogen as one of potential sources of power

The African Solar Industry Association (Afsia) has identified “dormant yet bursting with potential” sectors that can provide fresh revenue and universal clean energy.

Afsia’s 2023 “Solar Outlook” study, presented on January 18 at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, lists commercial and industrial (C&I), green hydrogen, solar-powered mobility, and productive energy use among Africa’s biggest potential (PUE).

South Africa dominated the C&I segment, which accounted for 28% of newly installed capacity in 2022 and grew from 2021 capacity. Afsia expects continent-wide C&I growth with over 5 GW of projects in development.

Given Africa’s strong sun irradiation, the research recommends green energy. Afsia believes Africa has ideal green hydrogen production conditions. Solar energy can cut shipping costs, according to Afsia.

Afsia’s “opportunities” forecast includes the new solar component of PUE, supported by solar household systems and minigrids, but the research notes an increasing demand for revenue-generating solutions.

Afsia analyzes solar energy system installed capacity and manufacturing potential by country. The group says 49 African countries are exploring at least 1 MW of solar systems, and 29 are considering more than 100 MW.

Africa has over 10 GW of solar projects, a major milestone. In 2022, countries erected 220 GW to 260 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, bringing the world total to 1.15 TW.

24% to 29% of historical solar PV capacity was added in 2022. 191 GW of solar PV capacity was added in 2021, 27% of the total.

2022 was good for solar in Africa, though not as good as globally. The continent added 1 GW of PV capacity, up 14% from 2021.

SoCalGas reveals hydrogen refueling system for SunLine buses
