thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers has been won a contract by Air Products to deliver a more than two-gigawatt (2 GW) electrolysis plant for one of the world’s biggest green hydrogen projects, NEOM in Saudi Arabia.

The facility will be designed, procured, and built by thyssenkrupp using their large-scale 20 megawatt (MW) alkaline water electrolysis module. After commissioning, the project partners NEOM, ACWA Power, and Air Products (“NEOM Green Hydrogen Company”) will run the plant, which will produce hydrogen that will be synthesized into carbon-free ammonia for export to worldwide markets solely by Air Products. Engineering and procurement efforts have begun, and manufacturing is expected to begin in 2026.

In July 2020, Air Products announced the signing of an agreement with ACWA Power and NEOM for a world-scale green hydrogen-based ammonia manufacturing facility driven by renewable energy. thyssenkrupp was chosen as a technology provider early in the project by its key partner Air Products, and has engaged extensively on early engineering and project development. The signing of the project contract represents a significant step forward in both firms’ cooperative endeavor over the last year to establish green hydrogen production facilities by combining their complementary technical, engineering, and project execution skills. The project is being realized with the help of thyssenkrupp’s large-scale technology, which is assisting Air Products in the development of green hydrogen for sustainable transportation, chemicals, and power generation.
