Toho Gas and Toyota Tsusho have teamed up with TotalEnergies of France to investigate the development of a value chain for hydrogen and synthetic methane, with the goal of lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The businesses had agreed to collaborate on a feasibility study. The joint research will look at the value chain of TotalEnergies’ hydrogen and synthetic methane supplies to Japan, as well as the fuels’ distribution and consumption in the domestic market. During the study, the companies will look at overseas production sites and import areas, possibly in central Japan’s Chubu region, where Toho Gas and Toyota Tsusho are based, with the goal of conducting a demonstration project in the future.

Toho Gas is also stepping up its efforts to grow its hydrogen business. The company will research challenges and solutions in expanding the use of a gas engine co-generation unit that has been retrofitted to allow co-firing of hydrogen and city gas, with the help of the state-controlled research and development institute Nedo.
