Towngas and Bravo Transport Services have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to utilize hydrogen as an alternative fuel for buses in Hong Kong. This ambitious project marks an integral leap in the advancement of hydrogen-powered transportation in the region.
The agreement was struck between Towngas, a well-established player in the energy sector with over 160 years of experience, and Bravo Transport, which operates the Citybus service. Both companies pledged to establish a hydrogen extraction facility capable of extracting up to 500 kg of hydrogen per day, enough to run between 10 and 12 hydrogen buses daily.
Under the agreement, Towngas will oversee the design and extension of the existing pipe network, supply fuel cell grade hydrogen, install the hydrogen extraction facility, and provide maintenance services for the equipment. Bravo Transport’s Citybus will take on the responsibility for the procurement and maintenance of hydrogen buses, and manage their operation on selected routes to collect operational data and information.
The collaborative endeavor received support from the Hong Kong government, with Ms. Diane Wong Shuk-han, Under Secretary for Environment and Ecology, expressing appreciation for the initiative. “This collaboration supports Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050, promoting the development of green transport and aiming to achieve zero vehicle emissions and carbon neutrality before 2050,” she stated.
Towngas Managing Director, Mr. Peter Wong Wai-yee, showed optimism about the venture, stating, “Through our existing gas pipeline network across Hong Kong, high-purity hydrogen can be extracted and delivered by simply installing a hydrogen extraction facility at the customer’s end. Using gas pipelines to transport hydrogen avoids potential risks associated with road transport of hydrogen and saves transportation costs.”
Dr. Wan Yufeng, Citybus Director and Templewater Partner and Head of Impact Investing shared the sentiment. “We are excited to work with Towngas, the oldest energy company in Hong Kong, around the introduction, supply, and use of hydrogen for transportation purposes. We believe that Towngas will be a strong partner particularly for the introduction of our second hydrogen refueling station based in Hong Kong Island with their extensive experience and gas supply chain as we move towards a zero-emission future,” he said.
In a rapidly changing world, the shift towards clean energy sources is imperative. This initiative by Towngas and Bravo Transport Services is an important step in the right direction, heralding a new era of sustainable transportation in Hong Kong.
The MOU, valid for a year and extendable by mutual agreement, promises to lay the groundwork for a strategic alliance between Towngas and Bravo Transport. It will assist the Hong Kong government in framing regulations and subsidy schemes for the use of hydrogen in buses and heavy vehicles, thereby bolstering the city’s shift towards green and sustainable transportation.
