Toyota may have acknowledged its error in moving so slowly on EVs, but the carmaker isn’t putting other energy sources out of its mind.

Toyota’s new CEO recently stated that the business would continue to prioritize hydrogen while moving toward electrification in a speech at a recent motorsports event.

Toyota aims to “guarantee that hydrogen remains a viable choice,” according to CEO Koji Sato. Despite still, California is the only state in the union where the carmaker sells its one and only hydrogen vehicle. At the same time, Sato acknowledged that the corporation doesn’t have any particular revenue or business objectives related to hydrogen.

Toyota has long emphasized a diverse strategy to achieve zero emissions, even though the carmaker says it plans to sell 3.5 million electric vehicles by the end of the decade while developing them. Sato stated, “We are really putting forth an effort on everything. In order to adjust products and energy to various carbon-neutral needs in various markets, it is crucial to maintain flexibility.

The only two automakers currently offering hydrogen fuel cell automobiles in North America are Toyota and Hyundai. The Toyota Mirai converts hydrogen into electricity to power a 182-horsepower electric motor. A 161-horsepower Hyundai Nexo is available. Only California, the only state with gas stations, sells either of these items, and they are both outrageously expensive.
