MAIRE has announced the awarding of a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract to Tecnimont for the development of an integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia plant in Sines, Portugal.

The project, spearheaded by MadoquaPower2X consortium, marks a pivotal step towards establishing a robust renewable energy value chain in the region.

The proposed plant will utilize alkaline-water electrolyzer technology for green hydrogen production and the Haber-Bosch process for green ammonia synthesis. This innovative approach underscores the consortium’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies to facilitate the transition towards a greener, more sustainable future. By harnessing renewable energy sources, including solar and wind assets, MadoquaPower2X aims to produce up to 1,200 metric tons per day (MTPD) of green ammonia, setting a new benchmark for clean energy production in the region.

Tecnimont’s scope of work encompasses the design and integration of various components, including electrolyzers, air separation units, ammonia production facilities, and storage infrastructure. Leveraging its Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) expertise, Tecnimont is poised to deliver a comprehensive solution that aligns with the highest environmental and safety standards. The collaboration between Tecnimont and MAIRE’s subsidiary, NextChem Tech, further underscores the synergistic approach driving the project forward, blending EPC capabilities with cutting-edge technological competencies for hydrogen production and storage.

Situated in Sines, the largest industrial and logistical hub in the Iberian Peninsula, the project holds strategic significance in facilitating the export of clean energy carriers to Northwestern European markets. With the Port of Sines serving as a pivotal gateway, the project is poised to enhance Portugal’s position as a key player in the renewable energy sector, fostering economic growth and market expansion opportunities.

As the global community intensifies efforts to combat climate change and transition towards renewable energy sources, initiatives like the MadoquaPower2X project exemplify the power of collaboration and innovation in driving meaningful change. By harnessing green hydrogen and ammonia production technologies, the project not only promotes environmental sustainability but also fosters economic development and energy security in the region.
