Swedish precision seals and bearings developer Trelleborg has unveiled its innovative H2Pro range of advanced hydrogen sealing materials.

With the increasing significance of hydrogen as a fuel source and energy storage medium in the transition to a carbon-neutral world, Trelleborg’s new materials aim to address the challenges associated with sealing and storing hydrogen.

Hydrogen, due to its unique characteristics, poses difficulties in terms of permeation, leakage, and rapid gas decompression (RGD). These challenges arise from hydrogen’s small molecular structure and its ability to be absorbed into seals, leading to potential blistering and cracking during sudden pressure relief. Trelleborg recognizes these obstacles and has developed specialized materials to support various industries involved in hydrogen, including energy generation, aerospace, off-highway, transportation, and marine sectors.

The H2Pro range features the EBT25 EPDM and Zurcon H2Pro ZLT TPU materials. The EBT25 EPDM is designed to withstand high-pressure environments at elevated temperatures, while the Zurcon H2Pro ZLT TPU is tailored for very low temperatures. These materials exhibit excellent resistance to permeation and rapid gas decompression, making them well-suited for sealing hydrogen in demanding conditions.

To ensure the reliability and performance of their sealing materials, Trelleborg employs advanced testing rigs to assess factors such as oxygen and ozone aging, hydrogen compatibility, leakage, permeation, and resistance to rapid gas decompression. Compliance with international standards is also a key focus.

The Zurcon H2Pro ZLT can be produced as O-Rings for static sealing on various equipment, including valves, filters, refueling nozzles, pumps, connectors, and fittings. Similarly, U-Cups made from Zurcon H2Pro ZLT can be employed in both static and dynamic applications such as valve stems, actuators, and regulators. The H2Pro EBT25 is suitable for manufacturing O-Rings for static sealing and custom molded parts and frame seals for fuel cells and electrolysis equipment.
