The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) in Trinidad and Tobago, led by the Honorable Stuart R Young MP, recently convened a significant meeting with a delegation from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), led by Carina Cockburn, along with representatives from the National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (National Energy) and its President, Dr. Vernon Paltoo.
The focal point of these discussions was to chart the course for advancing initiatives outlined in the groundbreaking study titled “The Roadmap for a Green Hydrogen Economy in Trinidad and Tobago,” which was launched in November 2022.
In March 2023, the Cabinet granted approval for IDB’s support to propel the initiatives outlined in Horizon 1 of the Green Hydrogen Roadmap. The specific project aimed at introducing green hydrogen demonstration projects in Trinidad and Tobago, initiating the Wind Resource Assessment Program (WRAP), and devising business models and financial structures to attract private sector investors to the burgeoning green hydrogen industry. This move aligns with Trinidad and Tobago’s vision of establishing a robust green hydrogen market while fostering the active involvement of state energy companies, such as National Energy, and creating an enticing framework for private sector participation.
Green hydrogen, produced through the process of electrolysis using renewable energy, holds immense promise as a clean and sustainable energy carrier. As countries worldwide embark on energy transition initiatives, low-carbon energy products like green hydrogen gain prominence. The use of green hydrogen presents a transformative opportunity for Trinidad and Tobago, positioning the nation to enhance its regional and global leadership in the energy sector.
The advancement of green hydrogen initiatives in Trinidad and Tobago carries the potential for far-reaching impacts in the medium and long term.
