CCR Explores Hydrogen Train Deployment in Brazil

CCR, a major controller of medium and high-capacity transport operators in Brazil, is considering deploying hydrogen trains in the country. The company has been in discussions with the market, exploring the possibility of a supply agreement to support this initiative. While the green hydrogen industry is in its early stages in Brazil, companies like Unigel, Braskem, and EDP have begun producing the fuel locally. CCR’s undercarriage suppliers, Alstom and Hyundai Rotem, are highlighted in the endeavor.

Fertiberia and Repsol Plan 150 MW Green Hydrogen Plant in Puertollano

Fertiberia is partnering with Repsol to construct and operate a 150 MW green hydrogen plant in Puertollano, of which 50 MW will be used for the company’s operations. The project is set to receive 150 million euros in funding from the H2 Pioneers program, part of the European Union’s Next Generation funds. The plant is expected to produce 2,700 million tons of green hydrogen per year and create a thousand jobs during construction and commissioning. Fertiberia is already involved in green ammonia production through hydrogen synthesis from Iberdrola, with the company being the consumer of 30% of this energy produced in Spain.

Newfoundland and Labrador Approves World Energy GH2’s Green Hydrogen Project

Newfoundland and Labrador have approved World Energy GH2’s land applications for Project Nujio’qonik, a major step towards establishing the first commercial-scale green hydrogen project in North America. This project will feature two 1 GW wind farms and a hydrogen/ammonia plant in the Port of Stephenville, becoming one of the world’s first wind-to-green-hydrogen projects at commercial scale, with hydrogen production set to commence in late 2025. The Crown land leases are contingent on completing the provincial environmental assessment process, which Project Nujio’qonik has already completed, involving over 15 months of studies. The project is seen as an opportunity for Newfoundland and Labrador to become a global leader in green energy production and export.

Malaysia’s Sarawak Aims to Become Green Hydrogen Hub by 2027

The Ministry of Economy in Malaysia expressed full support for Sarawak’s development of the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub through SEDC Energy. Hydrogen energy aligns with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), focusing on renewable energy components. As part of the effort, three integrated projects in Sarawak, including a green hydrogen production plant in Kuching and two in Bintulu, are set to drive large-scale green hydrogen production. This initiative aims to establish Sarawak as a regional green hydrogen hub by 2027, fostering new hydrogen-based industries. Projects like H2biscus and H2ornbill, expected to commence operations in 2027, will play key roles in this endeavor.

WAE Technologies Unveils Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Platform EVRh

WAE Technologies has introduced its new EVRh platform, an ultrahigh-performance hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) with a lightweight composite structure. Designed to showcase the potential of hydrogen-powered powertrain systems, EVRh aims to reduce development costs and time to market for startups and OEMs while offering design flexibility and zero tailpipe emissions. The platform’s hydrogen fuel cell and battery system are centrally located for optimized weight distribution, and it can be configured for track-only or roadgoing vehicles. The EVRh powertrain can deliver 430 kW of power, sub-2.5-second acceleration, and an estimated Nürburgring lap time of under 7 minutes and 20 seconds.

Shipping Industry’s Roadmap to Net Zero by 2050

The 2023 Outlook report, “Beyond the Horizon: View of the Emerging Value Chains,” unveiled at the ABS Sustainability Summit during London International Shipping Week, outlines the shipping industry’s pathway to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The report emphasizes the need for increased investment in carbon capture technology, energy efficiency, and green fuels. To reach this goal, the industry must reduce fuel consumption by 15% on existing and new vessels, employ carbon capture on oil-burning ships to cut onboard CO2 emissions by 70%, and transition to e-diesel or zero-carbon biofuels for vessels unable to adopt carbon capture. Retrofitting energy-saving and carbon capture technologies will be essential, considering that conventional single-fuel engine vessels will continue to be constructed for the next decade. The report also underscores the importance of securing future fuel supply chains and highlights shipping’s pivotal role in the global clean energy transition.

Vietnam’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions Gain Momentum

In Hanoi, the Institute for Digital Economy Development Strategies (IDS) hosted a seminar on “New Energy [Green Hydrogen/Ammonia] – Global Trends and Prospects of Vietnam’s New Economic Sector.” The event brought together policymakers from the National Assembly and Government, domestic and international energy corporations, experts, and scientists. Experts highlighted that global carbon emissions, nearly 40 billion tons annually, necessitate a transition to zero emissions, demanding substantial efforts and emissions-reducing technologies. A key solution is green hydrogen/ammonia production, achieved by using renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. Clean hydrogen could slash up to 80 billion tons of CO2 emissions by 2050, especially in industry and transportation. Vietnam, with its renewable energy potential and strategic location, is poised to thrive in the hydrogen economy. Notably, 534 large-scale hydrogen projects totaling $240 billion were announced globally in 2022, reflecting the growing importance of hydrogen in the energy landscape.

Bear Head Energy and Eskasoni First Nation to Develop Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Facility in Nova Scotia

Bear Head Energy, Inc. and Eskasoni First Nation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the development of a green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Nova Scotia. The project aims to produce up to two million tonnes of green ammonia annually for global export. The partnership emphasizes responsible economic growth, environmental protection, and meaningful community involvement, aligning with a broader commitment to environmentally sustainable development and Mi’kmaq inclusion. Bear Head Energy, a subsidiary of BAES Infrastructure, underscores its dedication to working closely with Mi’kmaw communities, with the project receiving Environmental Assessment approval in April 2023, making it one of North America’s few fully permitted green hydrogen production sites.

CAF and UTE Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Pilot Project in Uruguay

CAF, the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean has signed a Non-Reimbursable Technical Cooperation Agreement with Uruguay’s UTE to support the development of the green hydrogen market. CAF will allocate $100,000 to generate practical knowledge for integrating green hydrogen into Uruguay’s energy sector. UTE will conduct technical studies on green hydrogen production, storage, and transport, contributing to the country’s energy transition efforts.
