ITM Power, along with project partners ScottishPower and BOC, has given an update on the Green Hydrogen for Glasgow project.

A planning proposal for a 20MW electrolyzer to be located at ScottishPower Renewables’ Whitelee wind farm near Glasgow, the UK’s largest onshore wind farm, has now been submitted. In addition to industry demand, the proposed electrolyser scale capability has been doubled. ScottishPower anticipates that a decision on the planning proposal will be made by the end of autumn 2021.

As part of the Green Hydrogen for Glasgow project, the Whitlee wind farm is the first site for which planning consent has been obtained. The initiative aims to bring carbon-free transportation and clean air to neighborhoods in the capital, which aspires to be the first net-zero city in the UK by 2030.

ScottishPower will lead the planned green hydrogen project, which will be built on the outskirts of Glasgow. BOC will design and run the plant, which will use wind and solar power generated by ScottishPower Renewables, as well as a 20MW electrolyzer supplied by ITM Power. The project’s aim is to provide hydrogen to the commercial market by 2023.

The Green Hydrogen for Glasgow project, which is part of the larger Green Hydrogen for Scotland collaboration, was unveiled in September 2020. The submission is a significant step forward in the collaboration between ScottishPower, BOC, and ITM Power to develop renewable hydrogen processing facilities with clusters of refueling stations around Scotland.

These clusters would allow Scotland’s plentiful sustainable wind and power generation ability to be converted to hydrogen for use in cars, thus assisting efforts to reach net zero emissions by 2045.
