Uruguay’s state-owned energy company, Ancap, is preparing to grant concessions for four offshore blocks aimed at producing green hydrogen.
This initiative aligns with the country’s ambition to become a global exporter of green hydrogen. Each block is expected to support wind farms capable of generating 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
Before granting these concessions, Ancap needs to acquire final approval from the government. Though there is no specified timeline, the approval process is currently underway. These offshore blocks will be situated 50 kilometers from the coast, southeast of José Ignacio.
Uruguay’s long-term renewable energy goals involve building 18 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity and 9 gigawatts of electrolysers to achieve an annual green hydrogen production of 1 million tonnes by 2040. The country aims to develop its initial pilot projects within the next few years to reach a hydrogen production capacity of 1 gigawatt by the end of this decade.
