As part of the United States’ long-term energy strategy, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which was signed into law in November 2021, shifted attention to hydrogen as a key component.

It was specifically provided for in Section 813 of the new law to give $8 billion for the establishment of at least four regional clean hydrogen hubs, and in Section 816, which provides $1 billion for a Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis Program, to shift priority to hydrogen. The new legislation also established deadlines for the DOE to begin implementing the Act’s provisions. The initial steps in implementing hydrogen procurement programs have been made, and information requests have been issued to industry and energy users alike. This is the next step, and the implementation of the initiatives may begin once the Department of Energy issues a Funding Opportunity Announcement.
