At the Varennes Carbon Recycling (VCR) plant in Quebec, Canada, Accelera by Cummins, a division of Cummins, will provide a 90-megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system.

With the cooperation of the governments of Canada and Quebec, Shell, Suncor, and Proman formed the VCR consortium. The proprietary waste-to-methanol technology platform created by Enerkem will fuel the biorefinery.

The largest electrolyzer offered by Accelera, the HyLYZER-5000, will make up this system’s four electrolyzers. Each HyLYZER-5000 consumes 25MW of electricity and has a daily hydrogen production capacity of up to 10 tonnes.

The capacity required to produce clean, renewable hydrogen and oxygen for VCR’s conversion of waste material into low-carbon-intensity fuels and circular chemicals will be provided by this groundbreaking plant. The facility is currently under construction, with a 2025 opening date.

Water is electrolyzed to produce hydrogen and oxygen. In order to assist in the decarbonization of a number of challenging industries, hydrogen can be stored as a compressed gas or liquid and used as an energy-dense, clean power source. The VCR plant will recycle carbon and hydrogen from waste materials using both the renewable hydrogen and oxygen.

The world’s largest PEM electrolyzer, operating at 20 MW in Bécancour, Canada, the first megawatt-scale demonstration plant for storing wind energy in the natural gas grid, Windgas Falkenhagen, Germany, and the world’s first hydrogen refue plant are just a few of the hydrogen “firsts” that Cummins’ zero-emissions technology brand Accelera has been a part of since its March 8 launch.
