Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of the technology group Wärtsilä, has secured a contract to supply cargo handling systems for three new Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) with a capacity of 93,000 m³.
The vessels are being constructed at Hanwha Ocean Co., a Korean shipyard formerly known as DSME, with two ships commissioned by a Greek ship owner and one by a Japanese owner. These orders were booked by Wärtsilä in the fourth quarter of 2024, further solidifying its position as a market leader in cargo handling systems.
The scope of Wärtsilä’s work includes the complete Cargo Handling System, which encompasses engineering, materials, and supervision, along with commissioning and gas trials. This comprehensive system is designed to ensure optimal performance and safety during cargo handling operations.
VLACs are specifically designed to transport ammonia, requiring reinforced cargo tanks and hulls due to ammonia’s high specific gravity. As a result, these vessels will have a deeper draught when fully loaded.
The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard starting in Q2 2025, marking a significant step forward in the development of ammonia transportation solutions within the maritime industry.
