Water Treatment Loop for Hydrogen Producing Electrolysis Plant

The patent outlines an innovative water treatment loop designed for integration with electrolysis stacks within a hydrogen-producing electrolysis plant.

Its primary objective is to enhance the quality of water supplied to the electrolysis stacks by effectively removing oxidants, such as peroxides, before entering the ion exchanger. This is achieved through a meticulously designed sequence of components including a water inlet section, an ion exchanger, a water outlet section, and a catalytic surface.

At the core of the patent is the water treatment loop, designated as element 20. This system is comprised of various vital components that collectively improve the water treatment process. Beginning at the water inlet section (21), the system enables drained water from the electrolysis stacks to be recirculated. As the water passes through this section, it then encounters a catalytic surface (23), strategically positioned between the water inlet section and the ion exchanger. This catalytic surface is pivotal in removing oxidants from the water, specifically targeting peroxides, ensuring that the water is in an optimal state before it reaches the ion exchanger (2).

Once the water has come into contact with the catalytic surface, it proceeds to the ion exchanger (2). The ion exchanger plays a crucial role in further refining the water quality by eliminating remaining impurities, thus preparing it for reuse within the electrolysis stacks. This sequential approach, from catalytic treatment to ion exchange, ensures a high standard of water purity, essential for efficient hydrogen production.

The inclusion of a catalytic surface prior to the ion exchanger exemplifies the innovation of the patent. By pre-treating the water and removing harmful oxidants, the catalytic surface extends the lifespan of the ion exchanger and enhances the overall efficiency of the hydrogen electrolysis process.
