Estonia moves forward with hydrogen-electric RoPax ferry

The national ferry operator, Estonian State Fleet, is developing one of the most cutting-edge ferry designs in an effort to introduce one of the biggest electric, hydrogen-fueled passenger ferries in 2026. The design project started in 2021, and the shipyard was chosen in a recent tender to build the vessel.

Working with the Finnish ship design and engineering company Deltamarin, designs for the zero-emission ferry were created. After reviewing and certifying the design, Lloyd’s Register determined that it was appropriate for the RoPax ferry’s continued design, construction, and procurement. After LR granted Approval in Principle for the design in November of last year, Estonian State Fleet promptly entered the construction tender. The deadline for submissions was January 17, and the winner should be announced soon.

ZHA designs first green hydrogen fuel stations for the recreational boating

After being appointed to develop the first green hydrogen fuel stations for the recreational boating industry, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) showcased its design.

The hydrogen fuel stations are designed to change vessel power and highlight marine transportation sustainability.

NatPower subsidiary NatPower H leads the project. The €100 million project invests on green H2 infrastructure. With 100 Mediterranean refueling stations planned by the end of the decade, work is anticipated to begin this summer. This plan aligns with global initiatives to provide recreational boaters with sustainable power sources.

Kobe-Osaka Port converts RTG crane to hydrogen

Kobe-Osaka International Port Corporation is converting a rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane’s diesel engine generator to a hydrogen engine generator for a global first to demonstrate hydrogen-fueled cargo handling technology.

Jointly commissioned by the Kinki Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism and the Port and Harbor Bureau of Kobe City Government.

It will be held at MOL’s Kobe International Container Terminal (KICT) in Hanshin’s Port. Japan aims to make its ports carbon-neutral by electrifying and hydrogenizing cargo handling machinery.

RK Singh presided over green hydrogen meeting

RK Singh, the Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, presided over a meeting on Tuesday in New Delhi to talk about using green hydrogen in addition to solar and wind energy to provide a steady supply of renewable energy.

According to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency, India placed fifth in the world for solar power capacity in 2023 and fourth globally for wind and renewable energy capacity. This is consistent with the government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to boost the use of renewable energy.

Ceres Power to present at India Energy Week 2024

Together with 35,000 other attendees, Ceres Power, a leader in sustainable energy technology globally, will be present at India Energy Week 2024 to talk about industry collaboration in achieving India’s energy transition goals.

In keeping with that goal, Ceres is also able to inform that testing of its 1MW-scale green hydrogen electrolyser has been successfully completed, and it is currently on its way to Shell’s Bengaluru, India, location. To validate the system’s functionality, cost, and performance, Shell and Ceres will conduct a demonstration.

Orlen Unipetrol starts winter testing of hydrogen-powered bus

In the subsequent stage of the hydrogen-powered bus pilot project, which was created by the Slovak business Mobility & Innovation Production s.r.o., the towns of Most and Litvínov will continue to work with the refining and petrochemical ORLEN Unipetrol Group.

The Ústí Region’s hydrogen platform includes the towns of Most and Litvínov as well as ORLEN Unipetrol and other organizations as active participants. Both towns are at the forefront of public transit’s use of hydrogen-powered mobility.

Both communities are working closely with the ORLEN Unipetrol Group, which arranged the bus for this pilot project and supplied funding, on the hydrogen-powered bus test operation.
