Welspun Corp Limited (WCL), India’s largest welded pipe manufacturer, and Tata Steel Limited have partnered to develop a “framework” to develop manufacturing capabilities for steel pipes for the transportation of pure hydrogen and natural gas-blended hydrogen, according to a statement released by WCL on June 10.
“WCL and Tata Steel Ltd have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create the framework for and then manufacture green pipes for the transportation of pure hydrogen and hydrogen mixed with natural gas,” according to the announcement.
“The green energy strategic partnership with Tata Steel is to evaluate the suitability of a variety of WCL-manufactured pipes for transporting the fuel of the future, which will aid in alleviating climate change-related challenges and securing the future for future generations,” it stated.
“It is a global industry project to produce the “world’s first guideline” for hydrogen gas transportation in existing and new offshore pipelines,” said Vipul Mathur, managing director and chief executive officer of Welspun Corp Limited. “We are focusing on developing a future-ready world while strengthening its expanding product offering in India and worldwide,” he said.
Tata Steel’s vice president of marketing and sales for flat products, Rajeev Singhal, stated, “The alliance is a significant step on our path to sustainability. This will allow us to jointly produce steel for the safe transport of hydrogen gas, a crucial necessity for the widespread adoption of hydrogen fuel in accordance with the government’s National Hydrogen Mission.
