Western Australia has taken a significant step towards a sustainable future with the approval of its first green hydrogen facilities.

Following rigorous assessments and inspections by Dangerous Goods Officers from the Department of Mines Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS), the green hydrogen power station in Denham and hydrogen refueling stations in Jandakot and Hazelmere, along with various vehicle transport systems, have been licensed and inspected under the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004.

The global demand for green energy production, including green hydrogen, green ammonia, and bio-fuel facilities, has been increasing exponentially. The operationalization of these small-scale projects marks a milestone in Western Australia’s journey towards embracing renewable energy sources.

The close collaboration between DMIRS and industry stakeholders has played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and success of these projects. By working together from the project’s inception and actively involving DMIRS in the decision-making process, both businesses and communities can benefit from improved safety outcomes.

Renato Pascucci, Horizon Power Project Manager, emphasized the importance of early engagement with DMIRS. The comprehensive assessment of their Denham Hydrogen Demonstration Plant provided valuable insights, identified potential risks, and highlighted areas for improvement. This proactive approach ensures that installations meet safety standards and operate in a sustainable manner.

The positive feedback received from industry partners like Horizon Power showcases Western Australia’s commitment to developing a thriving green fuels industry. It demonstrates that the region has the necessary systems and expertise to support larger, multi-million-dollar projects expected to commence in the coming years.

To further support the industry, the Dangerous Goods Directorate has developed a guide to managing hydrogen for industry stakeholders, providing essential information and guidelines.

Western Australia is well-positioned in the global renewable hydrogen market, with a range of competitive advantages. The region boasts world-class renewable energy resources, a vast land mass, established energy infrastructure, and a proven track record of exporting energy to international markets.

The approval of these green hydrogen facilities signifies Western Australia’s commitment to embracing sustainable energy sources and driving the transition towards a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
