Wind Turbine with Integrated Hydrogen Production System

Vestas Wind Systems A/S has recently filed a groundbreaking patent that integrates hydrogen production with wind turbines.

This innovation combines the benefits of wind energy with hydrogen production, offering a solution to energy storage and distribution challenges.

The patent describes a wind turbine system that goes beyond traditional electricity generation. It comprises several core components, including a tower, a nacelle, and wind turbine blades mounted on a hub. At the heart of this innovation is the integration of an electrolysis system, which is connected to the generator through an AC/DC converter. This system converts wind-generated electricity into hydrogen, expanding the functionalities of wind turbines.

One of the most notable features of this patent is the electrolysis system, which is strategically placed in the nacelle, the upper tower component. Electrolysis is the process of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. By integrating this system into the wind turbine, the energy that would typically be fed into the grid can, instead, be used to produce hydrogen. This hydrogen can later be used for various applications, such as fuel cells or as a clean fuel alternative in industries.

Another critical aspect of this innovation is the method of transporting hydrogen away from the turbine. The patent outlines a hydrogen transport line that runs along the exterior surface of the tower. This line extends from the electrolysis system’s position to a lower part of the tower, ensuring the produced hydrogen can be efficiently moved to storage or further distribution points. This design is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity and aerodynamics of the turbine, while also safely accommodating the new hydrogen transport functionality.

Integrating hydrogen production into wind turbines could address major issues related to energy storage and supply intermittency, one of the biggest hurdles in the renewable energy field.
