Yanmar Power Technology, a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, has initiated the development of a hydrogen-fueled 4-stroke high-speed engine for power generation in coastal vessels.

This initiative is part of the Nippon Foundation’s ambitious “Zero-Emission Ship Project,” aimed at achieving carbon neutrality in the coastal shipping sector by 2050.

The heart of this maritime revolution lies in the development of a hydrogen-fueled 4-stroke high-speed engine. Unlike traditional engines, this innovative propulsion system utilizes hydrogen as a fuel, emitting zero CO2 during combustion. As a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, a pioneer in diesel engine technology, YPT brings a rich legacy of innovation to the table.

In tandem with the engine development, YPT is set to create a hydrogen engine-compatible hybrid electric propulsion vessel. This futuristic vessel design integrates hydrogen engine generators with batteries, marking a crucial step towards comprehensive zero-emission maritime solutions. Uyeno TransTech Co., Ltd., a key player in the Uyeno Group, will spearhead the vessel’s development and construction, ensuring a seamless fusion of expertise and innovation.

The implications of this initiative are profound. By deploying hydrogen engines and hybrid electric propulsion, Yanmar aims to contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions in coastal shipping. The vessel’s upper deck will house a container unit-type hydrogen power generation system, showcasing the integration of cutting-edge technology for sustainable power solutions.

To support the broader goal of zero emissions, YPT is actively working on developing a pilot ignition engine that combines a small amount of pilot biofuel with hydrogen co-combustion. Additionally, a spark ignition hydrogen-only engine is in the pipeline. The company plans to commence onshore verification tests in 2024 using a 6-cylinder hydrogen engine with pilot ignition, with full verification operations targeted for 2026.

The “Zero-Emission Ship Project,” spearheaded by the Nippon Foundation, provides the overarching framework for these initiatives. With a focus on developing hydrogen-fueled ships, the project aligns with global efforts to combat climate change in the maritime sector. Through this collaboration, YPT aims to pioneer the development of hydrogen-powered vessels and actively participate in demonstration experiments, showcasing the viability of these technologies.
