Uniper Selects ITM Power to Supply 120MW Electrolysis System for H2ub Project

ITM Power has been selected by Uniper to supply electrolysis equipment for the Humber H2ub® (Green) project—a 120 MW green hydrogen facility planned at Uniper’s Killingholme site.

The project, recently shortlisted under the UK government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2), is poised to become a critical enabler for industrial decarbonization in the Humber region.

ITM Power will deploy six of its 20 MW POSEIDON core electrolysis modules, a system known for its high efficiency, compact design, and rapid response capability. Designed specifically for scalable hydrogen applications, the POSEIDON platform is expected to deliver operational flexibility and performance suited to industrial integration.

The Humber H2ub® (Green) project represents more than a standalone hydrogen venture. It forms part of a broader strategic collaboration between Uniper and Phillips 66 Limited, aimed at supplying green hydrogen to the Humber Refinery. Hydrogen produced at Killingholme will replace a portion of the refinery’s fuel gas in industrial-scale fired heaters—targeting a substantial reduction in process emissions from one of the UK’s key fuel production facilities.

The initial 120 MW phase could expand to over 320 MW in future stages, contingent upon regulatory and commercial progress. While the Final Investment Decision (FID) is slated for 2026, Uniper has signaled that the project could be fully operational by 2029.

The Humber region, historically a centre for fossil fuel-based industries, is now becoming a focal point for clean hydrogen deployment. As part of the UK’s broader net-zero strategy, projects like Humber H2ub® (Green) are intended to deliver emissions reductions while also supporting industrial competitiveness and local employment.
