The integration of offshore wind and green hydrogen production in the Netherlands has reached a new stage with the delivery of a 2.5 MW PEM electrolyzer from Elogen, a subsidiary of GTT Group, to the Baseload Power Hub (BLPH).
The project, led by CrossWind—a joint venture between Shell and Eneco—links the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm with onshore hydrogen production in Eemshaven to enhance grid flexibility.
Designed to store surplus wind power as green hydrogen during periods of oversupply, the BLPH system also enables reconversion to electricity during peak demand. This operational model addresses intermittency challenges inherent to offshore wind while testing the viability of hybrid renewable-hydrogen systems for large-scale deployment.
Industry analysts note that such storage solutions could become increasingly critical in Europe, where grid congestion and curtailment are rising concerns in high-renewables markets.
Elogen’s delivery follows a 17-week commissioning process that validated the electrolyzer’s performance through an on-site integration test. Ordered in February 2023, the unit was prepared and installed in just 30 months—an accelerated timeline in a sector where multi-year delays are common.
