Spain’s accelerating hydrogen economy is gaining new momentum as RIC Energy and Siemens form a strategic partnership to develop large-scale projects in renewable hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and green ammonia.

The alliance, formalized under the Hydrogen Valleys programme, underscores a shift from pilot-scale trials to industrial-scale deployment—linking technology integration, digitalization, and financial structuring into one cohesive framework.

The collaboration will center on two of Spain’s emerging industrial hubs: Compostilla Green in Cubillos del Sil and Besaya in Torrelavega. Both are strategically located in regions undergoing industrial reconversion, where access to renewable power and industrial infrastructure creates favorable conditions for hydrogen-based production. Siemens’ participation spans several of its divisions—Siemens S.A., Siemens Industry Software, Siemens Financial Services, and Siemens Innovation Strategies—enabling a full-spectrum approach that combines technical design with capital deployment and digital optimization.

This integrated model reflects a growing industry trend: the alignment of project developers, financiers, and technology suppliers to de-risk hydrogen investments and accelerate time-to-market. Spain’s hydrogen roadmap projects up to 4 GW of installed electrolyzer capacity by 2030, but progress has been uneven. Many announced projects have stalled due to permitting hurdles, volatile input costs, and financing uncertainty. By pooling Siemens’ automation and data-driven management tools with RIC Energy’s development experience, the partners aim to demonstrate operational efficiency and financial bankability at scale.

At Compostilla Green, the project will focus on producing renewable hydrogen for industrial use, replacing fossil-based feedstocks and fuels in local manufacturing processes. Meanwhile, the Besaya site will prioritize sustainable aviation fuel and green ammonia, targeting the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and chemical production. Both projects are expected to enhance regional technological capacity while supporting local employment and infrastructure renewal in areas affected by coal plant closures.

RIC Energy CEO José Luis Moya emphasized that the partnership will “accelerate the deployment of transformative projects in the field of hydrogen and its derivatives,” positioning Spain as a key hub in the emerging European hydrogen network. Siemens Spain CEO Fernando Silva noted that the initiative demonstrates Siemens’ “commitment to supporting large-scale industrial initiatives within the sustainable fuels sector,” signaling a clear intent to anchor Siemens’ technology leadership in Europe’s green industrial build-out.

Beyond technology deployment, the partnership incorporates a joint communication strategy to amplify the projects’ economic and environmental impact—reflecting how visibility, policy alignment, and financial confidence have become inseparable in the current phase of Europe’s hydrogen transition.
