JERA aiming for net-zero by 2050

JERA aims to achieve zero CO2 under the “JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050” goal.

The company formulated a “JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050” roadmap for its Japanese business and set new environmental targets to be met by 2030. JERA ‘s goals, including “JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050,” are focused on advancements in decarbonization technology, economic logic and government policy coherence.

JERA will take the following approaches to achieve its goal:

  • Complementarity between renewable energy and zero CO2 emission of thermal power generation.

JERA will reach zero CO2 emissions through a mix of renewable energy and zero CO2 thermal power generation. The implementation of renewable energy is enabled by thermal power generation capable of producing electricity, independent of natural conditions. JERA will encourage the adoption of greener fuels and explore thermal energy that does not emit CO2 during power generation.
  • Establishment of Roadmaps Suitable for Each Country and Region.

Zero CO2 emissions can be achieved by creating roadmaps that demonstrate optimum solutions for each country and region. Given that the energy situation is different for each country and region — such as the existence of regional transmission lines or pipelines and the types of renewable energy that could be adopted — JERA will work with stakeholders on a country-by-country and regional basis to create road maps. JERA has developed a roadmap for our business in Japan and we will extend this approach to other countries and regions.
  • Smart Transition

Zero CO2 emissions can be accomplished by a mix of accessible and efficient technology as decisions are taken, reducing technological risks and smoothing the transition to a green society.

The main pillars of the Roadmap are the shutdown of all inefficient coal-fired power plants (super-critical or smaller) by 2030 and the gradual increase in the ratio of mixed combustion of fossil fuels, ammonia and hydrogen to thermal power plants.

In the future, the JERA Roadmap will progressively evolve in more detail on the basis of specific circumstances, such as government policies.

Following the “JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050” roadmap for Japan’s industry, JERA has set the “JERA Environmental Target 2030 for Japan” to reach the following goals by 2030:

  • Remove all inefficient (super-critical or less) coal-fired power plants and conduct demonstration tests of mixed combustion with ammonia at high-efficiency (ultra-super-critical) coal-fired power plants.
  • Promote the development of renewable energy based on offshore wind power projects and work to further improve the efficiency of LNG thermal power generation.
  • Reduce the carbon emission intensity of thermal power plants by 20 percent on the basis of the long-term energy supply-demand forecast for 2030 as set by the government.
