HBIS launches world’s first hydrogen metallurgy demonstration project

HBIS Xuansteel officially began construction on its Hydrogen Energy Application Pilot Project, making it the world’s first hydrogen metallurgy demonstration project.

The HBIS Xuansteel Hydrogen Energy Development & Application Pilot Project is an important step in the implementation of the National Strategy for Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutralization, as well as the Hebei Provincial Full Green & Low Carbon Recycling Development Economic System. It is also an integrated part of the HBIS Xuansteel upgrading project.

As one of the world’s largest steel manufacturers, HBIS has taken on the responsibility of Producing Green Steel for Mankind and, as the industry’s first, set the goal of Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutralization. Innovative research and development will be conducted throughout the entire process of distributed green energy application, low cost hydrogen generation, hydrogen direct reduction, and CO2 removal in order to explore the optimal path of low carbon, even zero carbon development in order to lead the world steel industry and build “Factories of the Future.”

The HBIS Xuansteel Hydrogen project leverages the national hydrogen energy pilot city of Zhangjiakou, combines wind and solar power to build a hydrogen rich gas energy application project, and investigates new technologies, procedures, and business models.

The HBIS Xuansteel Hydrogen project leverages the national hydrogen energy pilot city of Zhangjiakou, which is a showpiece project for the entire country, to build a hydrogen rich gas energy application project and explore new technologies, new procedures, and new business models. Utilize the benefits of the Zhangjiakou National Renewable Energy Demonstration Zone to develop an innovative development model for “zero-carbon” hydrogen production and hydrogen energy industry development that can be promoted and replicated. To replace the traditional BF hot metal procedures, the project employs new hydrogen reduction technologies, such as Teova Energiron-ZR technology. According to the studies, the project could reduce carbon emissions by 60% each year. After completion, it will be the world’s first low-carbon generation pilot plant, marking a first revolutionary, showpiece, and key step in the steel industry’s green and low-carbon development.
