In the summer of 2022, a waste-to-green hydrogen manufacturing centre will be operational.
The plant will be co-developed by the partners at Republic Services’ West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill in Northern California, with Hyzon contributing up to 75 percent in the equity and offtake from the waste-to-hydrogen hub.
Raven, a renewable fuels firm, plans to process up to 99.9 tons of organic waste a day at the dump at first, producing up to 2,000 metric tons of renewable hydrogen per year as well as power for its operations. Hyzon, a prominent global supplier of hydrogen fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles with zero emissions, will provide offtake through its vehicle clients.
This facility will contribute to California’s aim of reducing organic waste emissions as part of the state’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant (SLCP) Reduction Strategy, as well as creating negative carbon intensity hydrogen fuel.
Raven’s unique Steam/CO2 Reformation method is one of the world’s only waste-to-hydrogen non-combustion processes. Its approach produces more green hydrogen per ton of garbage than competing technologies by avoiding the production of harmful contaminants and particles.
It will also make it easier for fleet operators to shift to zero-emission vehicles because production, refueling infrastructure, and vehicle availability will all be geographically and technologically matched. Customers should expect lower total costs as a result of this alignment.
