Air Products will showcase its hydrogen for mobility solutions for heavy-duty transportation at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Long Beach, California, from August 31 to September 1.
“The switch to hydrogen for heavy-duty transportation such as buses and semi-trucks is an essential part of building a cleaner future through the energy transition,” said Eric Guter, Air Products’ vice president, hydrogen for mobility solutions. “Hydrogen fuel cell trucks and buses have inherent technical advantages compared to their battery electric counterparts including faster refuel times, the ability to travel longer distances, while carrying heavier payloads.”
The ACT Expo is North America’s largest conference and exhibition dedicated to advanced transportation technologies and clean fleets. Around 5,000 attendees and more than 250 exhibitors are expected.
Air Products recently announced intentions to convert around 2,000 trucks in its global fleet to zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell cars. Cummins Inc., a global pioneer in power and hydrogen technology, is collaborating with the company to speed the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell trucks in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Cummins will supply Air Products with hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrains fitted into heavy-duty vehicles manufactured by chosen OEM partners.
Air Products and Cummins anticipate to launch the plan’s initial pilot phase in 2022 and will also collaborate to expand access to renewable hydrogen, including hydrogen infrastructure opportunities that encourage the use of hydrogen for mobility. “The most effective method to promote hydrogen adoption for heavy-duty applications is for us to have units on the road and set an example,” Guter explained.
Hydrogen is a critical component of a sustainable transportation system. Due to the duty-cycle requirements, particularly in adverse temperature conditions, hydrogen fuel cells are gaining traction as the technology of choice in heavy-duty applications. Hydrogen as a transportation fuel most closely resembles the experience with conventional transportation fuels. Air Products is involved in every stage of the hydrogen value chain, from manufacturing to distribution, storage, and dispensing, and has been a pioneer in hydrogen fueling for decades. Air Products, as the global leader in hydrogen production, has operational expertise with over 250 hydrogen filling station projects in 20 countries, and its technologies are used in over 1.5 million fuelling operations yearly.
