Network of hydrogen refueling stations planned

The STRING partner areas in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway recently unveiled their ambitions to connect a network of hydrogen refueling stations between Hamburg and Oslo.

Today, alternatives to fossil fuels are already available. Several technologies, including hydrogen cell technology, may facilitate the shift to zero-emission road transport. STRING members are now preparing to invest in this revolutionary process. GREATER4H was established under Schleswig-STRING Holstein’s leadership, and the state will continue to lead the initiative. Europe Minister Claus Christian Claussen stated, “In the transportation sector, zero emissions are only attainable with an emission-free charging infrastructure.

If GREATER4H is a success, it will be a significant step forward in the green transition and will demonstrate how complete decarbonization of road transport is possible.”

Refueling hydrogen-powered automobiles takes only about 5 to 12 minutes. This enables the transportation of products and people without encountering logistical challenges associated with battery-powered alternatives. Additionally, hydrogen vehicles are quiet and emit only water. Additionally, hydrogen vehicles are quiet and emit only water.

However, additional efforts are required to turn hydrogen into a reliable substitute for gasoline and diesel, particularly in terms of local availability. Adoption of hydrogen vehicles can be accelerated by developing an adequate refueling infrastructure. The STRING area enables us to come closer to a post-fossil fuel world.

The STRING area enables us to come closer to a post-fossil fuel world.  Thus, particulate matter pollution and CO2 emissions from the transportation sector can be eliminated. To address the issue of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, STRING members and six private firms have formed a transnational public-private partnership to leverage EU funding to encourage investments in hydrogen refueling infrastructure. If the GREATER4H initiative is successful, it will speed the development of hydrogen vehicles across the megaregion, positioning Northern Europe as a global leader in the green transformation of road transport.

Private partners Ever-fuel (DK), Hynion (NO), and GP JOULE will construct and operate the hydrogen filling stations (DE). Quantron Mechanics (DE) is developing the financial and market-based incentives necessary to increase demand for hydrogen trucks. Additionally, rsted (DK) and RENOVA (SE) have joined the project as associated partners, bringing their insights as green hydrogen suppliers and hydrogen truck operators, respectively, to the success of GREATER4H. STRING members will promote GREATER4H by standardizing their regulations governing the delivery of hydrogen infrastructure, to the extent practicable.
