Energie Steiermark to use H-TEC PEM electrolyzer for Renewable Gasfield project

A PEM Electrolyser from H-TEC SYSTEMS will be used to make green hydrogen as part of the Renewable Gasfield development project. The emission-free energy carrier will be used directly for cars, or it will be fed into the grid as “green gas” and used there.

As a bonus, the green hydrogen will also be used by businesses in the area. As much as 70 tons of hydrogen will come from the plant every year. A Styrian mining company will get that amount of hydrogen from the plant. As time goes on, the company wants to make its work even more environmentally friendly. As soon as mid-2022, the electrolyser should be running.

E-Steiermark is in charge of building the Renewable Gasfield production facility in Gabersdorf, Austria, which is in the southern part of the country. Electrolysis is used to turn renewable energy into green hydrogen. This is part of a holistic approach to power-to-gas. The system will be connected to an existing biogas system and paired with a new photovoltaic system that has just been built. Hydrogen and oxygen are made when the ME450/1400 PEM Electrolyser splits water in half. It takes about 1 MW of electricity to make about 450 kg of hydrogen a day. You can then use it to move cars or do other things that don’t pollute because it’s made from green hydrogen.

The power-to-gas method is good for storing energy, because it converts electricity into gas. People who use hydrogen as a battery storage system don’t have to worry about it running out.

Another part of the project is to put green hydrogen into the natural gas network and use it to make electricity. As you can see, the hydrogen is mixed with raw biogas from a biogas plant. This means that high-quality methane can be made and fed into the natural gas grid in a CO2-neutral way. 60 single-family homes can be supplied each year with the green natural gas that is made this way.

At the heart of the Renewable Gasfield is an energy concept that can be changed and expanded on. The goal is to feed the natural gas into the existing network and give the hydrogen to people in storage trailers. This means that green hydrogen can be delivered to homes, businesses, and cars.
