Air Products will build, own, and operate a 10 metric ton per day facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, to produce green liquid hydrogen.
Hydrogen for mobility in California and other places requiring zero-carbon hydrogen will be sold by the zero-carbon liquid hydrogen facility when it comes online in 2023.
For the production of gaseous hydrogen, the facility will use two thyssenkrupp nucera electrolyzers, which will then be converted to liquid hydrogen using Air Products’ proprietary technology. It will also have a terminal for distributing products to customer locations throughout California and other markets.
The entire Air Products facility is powered by zero-carbon renewable energy, which eliminates carbon from the production process. The liquefier will be fed using cutting-edge compression technology provided by the Baker Hughes strategic alliance. Both the previously announced carbon-free hydrogen NEOM project in Saudi Arabia and the recently announced net-zero hydrogen production complex in Alberta, Canada are using this compression technology.
Through the implementation of a number of regulations, California has taken steps to decarbonize its transportation sector, which accounts for the majority of the state’s emissions. The state has also set a target of zero emissions for all drayage trucks by 2035 and heavy duty vehicles by 2045. Hydrogen is a critical component of the transportation sector’s decarbonization. As a result of faster refueling times, longer range, and larger payloads as well as better performance in extreme climate conditions, hydrogen fuel cells are becoming the preferred technology for heavy-duty applications over batteries. The process of refueling a vehicle with hydrogen is the most like that of a conventional motor vehicle.
