HEGRA, Yara, Aker Clean Hydrogen, and Statkraft’s joint venture has changed the ownership structure.
Yara, Aker Clean Hydrogen, and Statkraft joined forces in 2021 to form HEGRA, with the goal of electrifying Yara’s ammonia plant in Heroya, Norway, and eradicating its annual CO2 emissions of 800,000 metric tons.
The project’s early stages have been developed by an integrated team over the past year. HEGRA’s recently completed feasibility study shows that the project is viable, but the current ownership structure does not support its continuation. Because of the departure of Aker Clean Hydrogen and Statkraft from HEGRA, the project will be carried out solely by Yara.
There is still a willingness by the companies to work together in some areas of the value chain to promote hydrogen production and demand in Norway and around the world.
Statkraft and Aker Horizons plan to work together in the future to develop additional green hydrogen and ammonia projects.
