During a visit to the North Sea Port in Terneuzen, Rob Jetten, the Dutch Minister of Climate and Energy, received the first certificate for green hydrogen.
These certificates make it easier to trade hydrogen, as HyXchange intends. Thus, HyXchange contributes to the energy transition, the growth of sustainable energy, and the reduction of the Netherlands’ reliance on natural gas.
The HyXchange Trading Platform is a collaboration between Gasunie and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the Port of Amsterdam, Groningen Seaports, and the North Sea Port Authority (Vlissingen, Ghent, Terneuzen). The hydrogen economy will rely heavily on Gasunie and the Dutch ports.
Hydrogen trading will take place on the trading platform HyXchange, which will be created specifically for this purpose. The certificates are Guarantees of Origin, which certify that the hydrogen was produced using sustainable energy sources such as green electricity. Vertogas B.V., which already provides Guarantees of Origin for biogas and has been appointed by the Minister to develop Guarantees of Origin for hydrogen, has recently been working on a certification system to support this new task. This system will be tested in a certificate pilot organized by HyXchange over the next three months, with 16 market participants involved in green and low-carbon hydrogen. Following the completion of this pilot, the final issue of Guarantees of Origin for hydrogen will begin.
The HyXchange hydrogen exchange initiative has attracted 45 market participants from the energy and industrial sectors. The ultimate goal is to establish a trading facility on the Dutch hydrogen infrastructure that will serve as a national and international central trading point and price indicator.
