EQTEC, Wood to build tech for Southport Hybrid Energy project

At the Southport Hybrid Energy Park in Merseyside, EQTEC PLC and partner Wood will build a multi-technology waste-to-energy project.

In the second stage of the Southport project’s development, the technology business and Wood agreed to work together on the design and implementation of a clean waste-to-hydrogen solution.

In order to create a waste processing facility, anaerobic digestion (AD) facility, combined heat and power (CHP) engines, and a 2MW battery storage facility, EQTEC has signed a collaboration agreement with Anaergia for the project’s initial phase.

EQTEC has been developing a strategy for phase 2 of the project to incorporate their synthesis gas technology to convert 25,000 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) annually into about 2.5-3.0 MWe of clean power.

In order to replace or supplement the phase 2 RDF-to-electricity solution, EQTEC and Wood have now decided to jointly develop an RDF-to-clean hydrogen solution.

The syngas technology from EQTEC and the VESTA syngas-to-hydrogen technology from Wood would be combined to create the RDF-to-hydrogen solution. The corporation stated that further planning authorization is required for the proposal.

The Southport plant is anticipated to export to the grid the equivalent of 20% or more of the facility’s energy needs once both phase 1 and phase 2 solutions are in place, according to EQTEC.

EQTEC COO Jeff Vander Linden made the following statement about the partnership with Wood: “Our joint efforts at Southport with Wood will not only produce a special waste-to-hydrogen solution but will also introduce the Southport community to a solution for clean, circular, sustainable energy from waste.

Even the relatively small Southport plant will serve as a demonstration of the mixed economy and diversity of technologies that will characterize the future of renewable energy. Such initiatives represent the frontier of innovation in the UK. These and other changes to use Wood to show off effective, sustainable cleantech in action are exciting to us.

Separately, EQTEC reported that Logik Developments Limited and its Deeside WTV subsidiary have decided to further postpone the completion of their previously announced share purchase deal (SPA).

The SPA refers to the existing permitted 9.9 MWe EQTEC Advanced Gasification Technology project at Deeside in Flintshire, combined with a 2MW anaerobic digestion facility and a 182,000-tonne waste receipt plant.

According to EQTEC, negotiations to hire engineering firm, Black and Veatch, for the powertrain front-end engineering design (FEED) that will come after the EQTEC gasification facility are nearing their conclusion.

Additionally, it stated that negotiations are moving forward for the minimum £15 million sales of the project special purpose vehicle (SPV), with a number of parties involved at the due diligence stage.
