Next month, a second hydrogen manufacturing base will begin operations in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, to increase the energy supply volume to vehicle charging stations in Seoul and surrounding areas.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, the Pyeongtaek base, located in the Asan Industrial Complex around 60 kilometers south of Seoul, will have the potential to supply 430,000 hydrogen-fueled vehicles, including commercial ones, with energy annually.
The Energy Ministry contributed 5 billion won ($3.8 million) to the establishment project, with Gyeonggi Province, Pyeongtaek City, and others subsequently contributing 18.1 billion won.
“Once the base is operational, (wholesale and retail) hydrogen costs will decrease, and technology for hydrogen-related businesses will be improved,” the ministry said in a statement.
It was also stated that a total of 33 hydrogen charging stations in the Seoul-Gyeonggi-Incheon region are expected to experience shipping cost reductions of approximately 50 percent as a result of the gas being delivered from Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, located approximately 100 kilometers south of Seoul.
The ministry intends to complete construction of more hydrogen production sites across the nation by the end of the year, as part of a national initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
