GLCH moves forward with DOE hydrogen hub application

With its application for a Department of Energy (DOE) hydrogen hub, the Great Lakes Clean Hydrogen Partnership (GLCH), which is made up of Linde, Energy Harbor, GE Aerospace, Cleveland-Cliffs, and the University of Toledo, has made progress.

By switching to hydrogen, a low carbon alternative fuel, Midwest manufacturing, mobility, power generation, and technology operators would reduce their reliance on greenhouse gas emitting feedstocks and fuels. This action will also draw investors and new companies that value having access to low-carbon hydrogen since it creates jobs at market rates, aids underserved communities, and promotes a better environment. The first stage of the DOE hydrogen hub application procedure is the submission of the GLCH Concept Paper.

Due to its unique access to abundant carbon-free nuclear power, the major intersection of I-80 and I-75, the dense concentration of manufacturing and technology companies, the Great Lakes marine shipping fleet, and a highly skilled workforce, the region is the ideal location for a clean hydrogen hub.

A number of major coalition members, including Energy Harbor’s Davis-Besse nuclear facility, Linde, GE Aerospace, Cleveland-Cliffs, many glass producers, and the University of Toledo, will develop low carbon hydrogen there. The regional clean hydrogen hub initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is managing $8 billion in infrastructure funding, and the GLCH partners are actively working with technology suppliers, hydrogen consumers, state and regional academic institutions, federal laboratories, and non-profit organizations to develop a clean energy hydrogen hub.

Through the use of already-existing carbon-free infrastructure from Energy Harbor’s safe, dependable nuclear power generation, technology that produces low-carbon hydrogen at a very competitive price, numerous distribution channels, and hydrogen-ready facilities like Cleveland-Cliffs’ Direct Reduction plant, GLCH will set itself apart from other hub initiatives. With tested technology, GLCH plans to go online faster than rival options.

The GLCH will be a crucial source for the automotive, power generation, trucking, steel manufacturing, and technology companies, with a focus on the Ohio and Michigan region. Additionally, it will provide as a future link between the East Coast and the larger Midwest (Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin).
