EverWind green hydrogen and ammonia project gets environmental approval

The first phase of EverWind’s $6 billion, 1 million tonnes per year green hydrogen and green ammonia project, which is located in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, has gained environmental approval.

The Hon. Timothy Halman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Nova Scotia, gave his consent. The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck of Germany signed the historic Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance in August 2022. EverWind is still on pace to deliver green ammonia to German off-takers, E.ON and Uniper, by 2025.

For EverWind and its First Nations equity partners, Membertou, Paqtnkek (Bayside Development Corporation), and Potlotek, receiving the environmental approval is a big accomplishment. It opens the door for the start of construction in the first half of 2023. It is among the first independent green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in the world and the first in North America to gain an environmental approval.

EverWind, which won a provincial request for applications for Crown property in December 2022, is now just requesting leases on 137,000 acres of land to create a 2GW onshore wind farm. By 2026, the second phase of its green hydrogen production facility is anticipated to be powered by onshore wind.

Early in 2022, EverWind purchased the Point Tupper terminal. The deepest ice-free berth on the East Coast of North America is at its active marine terminal. The facility is capable of producing more than 10 million tonnes of green ammonia annually. The location is a perfect hydrogen hub and has storage and logistics facilities worth around $1 billion already in place. It is also connected by vital infrastructure including pipelines, roads, and rails in addition to its port facility.
