A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and PT. PLN Nusantara Power, a subsidiary of Persero, to launch three technical studies relating to the co-firing of less carbon-intensive fuels at power facilities owned and run by Nusantara Power.
Along with MHI, Nusantara Power will carry out the three studies with assistance from Mitsubishi Power, MHI’s power solutions brand. This MoU builds on an earlier comparable agreement reached with PT. PLN Indonesia Power of the PLN Group in November 2022 and will help promote strategies to hasten the decarbonization of Indonesia’s energy systems.
The Muara Karang Power Station in Java, which is about 10 kilometres from Jakarta, will perform two studies to investigate the viability of introducing hydrogen co-firing for an M701F Series turbine currently in operation and ammonia co-firing in a gas-fired boiler. Several of the power plant’s major components, including a number of gas turbines, boilers, and steam turbines, were supplied by MHI.
The technical features of biomass co-viability firing’s will be assessed in a study at Nusantara Power’s Paiton Coal-Fired Power Station, which is also on the island of Java.
MHI will seek to assist Indonesia in achieving its 2060 Net Zero Emission target through this Agreement and other ongoing activities, with assistance from Mitsubishi Power.
