VNG AG and Salzgitter AG will collaborate to examine the options for delivering hydrogen and the related carbon footprint for making steel at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH’s steelworks in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony.
The collaboration’s goal is to finish a research on delivering hydrogen to the Salzgitter manufacturing facility. A supply of non-pipeline hydrogen derivatives, such as ammonia or methanol, that can be used as sources of energy for partial supply during a transition phase will also be considered in the analysis, as well as electrolyzer possibilities. The long-term connection to a supraregional hydrogen grid, which is already planned, is especially emphasised in order to transport significant amounts of hydrogen from various production regions and projects to the location.
Salzgitter and VNG are building on their productive partnership in the joint feasibility study by specifying the specifics related to hydrogen. Both businesses announced a collaboration in the area of green gas in the summer of 2020. A MOU was signed at this time, and as a result, two feasibility studies on the supply of climate-friendly hydrogen and on hydrogen transportation have already been completed.
