H-TEC SYSTEMS, a hydrogen specialist, is building a state-of-the-art and climate-neutral production and development site in Hamburg’s Rahlstedt district.

The Stack Manufacturing & Development Center will combine stack development, production, testing, and service at a single location and employ several hundred people in the long term. The factory, part of the PEP.IN research project, is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) via the H₂Giga lead project for hydrogen generation. The goal of the project is to make green hydrogen affordable and cost-effective by researching new and innovative processes for the competitive and series production of PEM electrolysis stacks and electrolyzers in Germany.

The Hamburg location has over 11,000 square meters of space for production and test procedures and aims to cover future product generations. H-TEC SYSTEMS will also develop and produce a new stack generation with enhanced performance in the Stack Manufacturing & Development Center. H-TEC SYSTEMS’ parent company, MAN Energy Solutions, plans to invest 500 million euros in electrolyzer production in the next few years to make H-TEC SYSTEMS one of the top three manufacturers worldwide.

The Victoria Park Hamburg site has a total area of 18,000 square meters, of which 11,400 square meters are used for manufacturing. The facility includes photovoltaic systems, district heating network, and rainwater cisterns, and it aims to achieve platinum standard certification from the German Sustainable Building Council. The project is being realized through a joint venture between Garbe Industrial Real Estate GmbH and the Jebens Group. The Hamburg-based real estate consulting company Grossmann & Berger, a member of German Property Partners (GPP), acted as an intermediary.

The project will have a positive impact on the hydrogen market, strengthening H-TEC SYSTEMS’ position and making a significant contribution to the global hydrogen initiative. However, the development of hydrogen technology and its infrastructure still faces challenges, such as high costs and limited availability of renewable energy sources. Nevertheless, with the growing need for hydrogen solutions in industry, this investment in a state-of-the-art production and development site is a promising step towards making green hydrogen more affordable and cost-effective.
