The state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil has taken another significant step towards decarbonization and renewable energy production by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with EN.IT, an international renewable energy operator.

The agreement commits EN.IT to develop a new wind farm in Rio Grande do Sul that will facilitate the production of green hydrogen and ammonia. This project aims to produce approximately 250,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually using renewable energy sources.

This partnership marks the fifth MoU between the Brazilian government and private companies for the advancement of green hydrogen projects. It aligns with the goals set out in bill 725 of 2022, which regulates the integration of hydrogen as an energy source in Brazil and establishes incentive parameters for the use of sustainable hydrogen.

For EN.IT, the Rio Grande do Sul project is just the beginning of their comprehensive “Dawn2zero” plan. This initiative is a dedicated platform for global investments in the field of green hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels and feedstocks. The platform aims to support the transition to zero-carbon emissions in traditional hydrogen sectors, such as chemicals, oil refining, iron and steel, as well as potential new markets like aviation, buildings, and power.

The CEO of “Dawn2zero,” Mattia D’Amato, highlights the increasing demand for green hydrogen and ammonia due to their versatile applications. The project in Brazil will produce 250,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, resulting in a reduction of approximately 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Ammonia can serve as a power generator, hydrogen carrier, and zero-carbon fuel. It can also be utilized in industrial processes, fertilizer production, and converted back to hydrogen through cracking technologies. This flexibility allows for the storage and transportation of hydrogen using existing infrastructure.

The primary objective of the green ammonia produced in Rio Grande do Sul is to serve both the local and international markets, including Europe. By contributing to global green energy targets, this project aims to play a significant role in building the foundation for a future net-zero carbon economy.

For EN.IT, the signing of this MoU signifies an important milestone in their long-term development project. It also recognizes the company’s status as a reliable partner for government authorities and industrial players on the path to global decarbonization. The Dawn2zero platform, in collaboration with strategic partners, aims to provide effective solutions to the climate challenges faced worldwide.

In conclusion, the memorandum of understanding between Rio Grande do Sul and EN.IT represents a significant step towards renewable energy production and decarbonization in Brazil. The project’s focus on green hydrogen and ammonia production aligns with global efforts to transition towards sustainable energy sources. By leveraging renewable energy and promoting the use of green hydrogen and ammonia, Rio Grande do Sul aims to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
