Delfzijl, located in the Northern Netherlands, is set to become home to an innovative green hydrogen plant called Djewels.
The project, spearheaded by HyCC and supported by key players including McPhy and Technip Energies, aims to produce up to 3,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, contributing to the decarbonization of European industries and climate goals.
HyCC, the parent company of Djewels B.V., has contracted McPhy for the supply of advanced electrolysers and Technip Energies for the design and construction of the 20 megawatt plant. The final investment decision for the project is expected later this year, marking a significant step towards realizing the potential of green hydrogen as a clean energy solution.
Djewels will utilize cutting-edge “Augmented McLyzer” technology from McPhy, which allows for higher current density and increased production flexibility while minimizing spatial requirements. This groundbreaking approach demonstrates the industry’s commitment to scaling up green hydrogen production and supporting the transition to a sustainable future.
The produced green hydrogen will find application in reducing CO2 emissions in the production of renewable methanol by OCI Methanol Europe, leading to a potential decrease of up to 27,000 tons of CO2 annually. Gasunie, DeNora, and Hinicio are among the companies lending their support to this groundbreaking initiative, recognizing its role in advancing the regional hydrogen ecosystem.
Djewels holds significance beyond its immediate impact, as it serves as a flagship project for the Province of Groningen and the wider Hydrogen Valley in the Northern Netherlands. The development of Djewels has received support from the regional Waddenfonds, while the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs have also recognized its potential and provided support.
Marcel GALJEE, Managing Director of HyCC, emphasizes the need for significant scaling up of green hydrogen production to meet European climate goals by 2030. The collaboration with Technip Energies and McPhy allows Djewels to deploy innovative technology at scale, gaining invaluable practical experience and paving the way for future projects.
Jean-Baptiste LUCAS, Chief Executive Officer of McPhy, highlights the importance of collaborations with major industrial companies in driving the green hydrogen sector forward. With projects like Djewels entering their implementation phase, the growth opportunities for green hydrogen are becoming increasingly tangible.
Djewels represents a major step towards the widespread adoption of green hydrogen, offering a viable solution for decarbonizing industries and advancing sustainability goals. As the project unfolds, it will serve as a testament to the transformative potential of innovative technologies in shaping a greener and more sustainable future.
