The creation of one of Australia’s largest anticipated green hydrogen hubs has been made possible thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
The project, which will be situated on Mirning Country in WA’s Goldfields-Esperance region, will span 15,000 square kilometers and call for the installation of about 3,000 wind turbines and 25 million solar panel modules.
These turbines and modules produce the necessary energy to electrolyze water into hydrogen. When finished, the project will produce 3.5 million tonnes of carbon-free green hydrogen annually, making it one of the biggest such energy centres in the world.
Bill Johnston, minister for the hydrogen industry, is quoted as saying:
“Congratulations to Western Green Energy Hub and the Korea Electric Power Corporation on working together to assess how this significant green hydrogen hub can be created. The MoU is a key step forward in the process of having this major project completed.
“This is an exciting project for Western Australia and will put our State on the forefront of producing green hydrogen, making it competitive on a worldwide scale. The Cook Government is proud to continue its commitment to the renewable hydrogen sector and its pledge to reduce emissions in WA.”
